10 Army soldiers killed in ‘insider attack’ in northern Afghanistan

AT-KABUL: Officials in northern Jawzjan province said on Tuesday at least 10 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have been killed in an apparent “insider attack” in the country’s north after a fellow soldier invited insurgents to overrun a check point.

Jawzjan Security Chief, Abdul Hafiz Khashi, told Afghanistan Times that the attack happened at around 2:30 am in Qash Tepa district of Jawzjan province last night.

Four soldiers were killed in grenade explosions and six others were shot death by militants he said.

Another three personnel in the check post managed to flee the attack unhurt.

Taliban infiltrator known as Alim also joined the attackers after the incident. However security forces were in the area looking to find the perpetrators.

Weapons and ammunitions of the soldiers were also stolen by militants.

Taliban claimed credit for the attack and said to have killed 10 and detained two ANA soldiers in the overnight attack.

Militants stepped up armed attacks in 2015, who now moved the scope of the war from restive south to calm parts of northern Afghanistan.

Militants in recent months traded control of several districts with security forces, raising concerns on fall of more areas to militants, after withdrawal of foreign troops.

The NATO forces put an end to its combat role in January and started their non-combat “Resolute Support” mission to train, mentor and equip Afghan National Security Forces.

Another security source in northern Balkh province told Afghanistan Times five policemen, including Dawlat Abad district police chief, were killed in a road side bomb blast today morning.

Four bodyguards of the commander sustained injures, who were soon transported to hospital for treatment.

Balkh is one of the secure provinces of the country, but militants activities are being reported in its remote districts in recent months.

Security forces under the supervision of Balkh Governor, Atta Muhammad, in recent weeks started clearance operations in districts that borders with insecure parts of the neighboring provinces.
