KABUL: At least 10 army service members were killed Friday when their convoy faced a Taliban ambush in the southern province of Zabul, provincial officials confirmed.
Atta Jan Haqbayan, head of provincial council, said that the incident took place in the morning on the Kabul-Kandahar highway near the Qalat city, provincial capital.
Haqbayan said that Taliban attackers also suffered heavy casualties during the fire exchange.
The soldiers had gone to the outskirts of Qalat city to assess security situation and came under ambush on the return, according to Haqbayan, who said that two Humvee tanks of the army were also destroyed.
He called on the government to pay more attention to the security situation in Zabul.
Other sources in the province claim that 15 security forces have been killed and one wounded in the clash.
Security officials in Zabul did not immediately comment and Taliban have not yet claimed responsibility for the ambush.
The attack comes at the time that according to government officials, an unannounced cease fire is dominant after the three-day long Eid truce that was agreed between the government and Taliban.
