KABUL: Ten members of the United Nations Security Council called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen schools for girls at all levels.
The UNSC members on Friday also released a joint statement. The members were Albania, Brazil, France, Gabon, Ireland, Mexico, the UK, US, Norway, and UAE.
“Our message is clear: All girls in Afghanistan should be able to go to school,” the statement reads.
The statement said more than a million Afghan girls were getting ready to return to school this week, but were not allowed.
“The decision is a reversal of the commitments the Taliban themselves have made in recent weeks and months as part of the ongoing engagement with the international community. It is a profoundly disturbing setback,” they said.
The UN Security Members called education a universal right for all children.
“By this statement, Members of the Security Council send a unified message to the Taliban: to open the schools for all. And to provide a safe learning environment for all children and youth in the country,” the statement reads.
The Islamic Earlier announced that all schools will be reopened for girls and boys students across the country. However, female students above grade sixth were not allowed to participate their classes last Wednesday—which was the first day of the educational year in cold areas across the country.
