By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: At least 12 people were killed and eight others wounded in a suicide attack in Kabul Saturday afternoon, security officials said, an incident following the Kunar suicide attack earlier the day.
“A suicide bomber blew himself up in front of the visitors’ gate of the Ministry of Defense at around 3:30pm,” said Najeeb Danish, a spokesman for the interior ministry.
He said most of the killed and injured were civilians.
The target of the attack was not immediately clear and the bomber detonated his explosive vest on the roadside, harming mostly civilians.
Defense Ministry Spokesman Dawlat Waziri also said that 12 people were killed, adding that two personnel of ministry were also seen among the dead. “Eight other people were injured in the incident.”
Ministry of Defense in a statement strongly condemned the attack. “Terrorist attacks and killing innocent civilians are the clear signs of weakness of the insurgents to fight face to face with our brave security forces,” the statement said.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The insurgent spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed that the target was defense ministry staff, which killed and injured several.
