At least 17 Islamic State (IS) –or Daesh — fighters have been killed and five others wounded during a clash in the Achin district of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Wednesday.
The 201st Selab Military Corps deputy spokesman, Capt. Syed Maqsood, said the security forces conducted an operation against the IS fighters in Achin late on Tuesday.
He said 17 Daesh members were killed, five others wounded and their five cars destroyed during the operation. Security forces suffered no casualties, the official added.
Achin district chief, Haji Ghalib Mujahid, confirmed the offensive and said Afghan security forces had attacked the IS fighters with heavy weapons. He believed the death toll for the insurgents could be higher.
Achin district, infested with a Daesh presence, has been the scene of intensifying clashes for the past one month. Local officials have claimed killing a large number of the militants during operations there. (PAN)
