AT-KABUL: At least 17 people lost their lives in the latest flash floods in the Kohistant district of the northern province of Sar-e-Pul, local officials said Wednesday, while 40 other are still missing.
“The floods swept away 200 houses throughout residential areas today morning,” Kohistanat’s Executive Officer Mullah Zulfiqar was quoted by Pajhwok Afghan News, as saying.
He added that dozens of people suffered heavy losses due to flash floods.
“17 bodies have been recovered and a search for other missing people is underway.”
Zulfiqar added that government officials could not venture into the restive areas because of an insurgent presence there.
Dr. Mohammad Qayem, deputy director of the Kohistanat Hospital, said the rescue teams had been deployed to the area to assist the victims.
Tens of people lose their lives in flash floods triggered by heavy seasonal rain falls across the country every year.
