AT-KABUL: At least 17 Afghan security personnel and 45 Taliban fighters have been killed in militants’ attack on Want Waigal district of eastern Nuristan province of the country, governor’s spokesman said on Saturday.
Muhammad Musa Shami told Afghanistan Times that the two days long clashes in Want Waigal district left 17 security personnel and 45 militants dead in the fighting, which is stopped since yesterday evening.
Security forces were working on a plan to launch massive clearance operation to clear all remote areas of the district from militants. At least 25 security personnel, five civilians and dozens of militants were injured in the attack.
The district was fallen to militants Friday morning, but was recaptured within few hours, after reinforcement was arrived in the district.
Taliban fighters on Friday torched the district office building and other residential areas soon after taking control of the district.
Around 800 militants, came from Kunar and the other side of the Durand Line, gathered for the attack.
Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban’s spokesman, tweeted that militants got control of the district and 16 security check posts.
Want Waigal district is situated adjacent to Manogay district of Kunar where insurgents have control on some of the areas.
Nuristan province have been remained as one of the poor provinces with fragile security situation as the Taliban were placing landmines and ambushing security convoys on roads leading to Nuristan from neighboring province.
