KABUL: The government has suspended the salaries and privileges of its 197 high-rank officials and workers for not registering their assets and properties.
Addressing a joint press conference, Abdul Wadud Basharyar, head of the Asset Registration and Review Office, informed of suspending the salaries and privileges of 172 members of Wolesi Jirga, 12 members of Meshrano Jirga, two ministers, four governors and four deputy ministers who had not yet registered their assets.
The measures had been taken following a three-week ultimatum and in accordance with a cabinet decision, said Basharayar. He said the suspension of salaries and privileges of the certain officials is in effect from Thursday (August 6).
Meanwhile, Ahmad Jawad Dadban, representing the special secretariat for combatting corruption, expressed his optimism about the progress in the assets registration process so far, saying that the majority of high-ranking government officials and employees had registered their assets over the past two years.
He informed that a new regulation on registration, dissemination and review of government employees’ assets had been prepared and that with its approval, this process would be further improved.
It’s pertinent to mention that the bill on registration and sharing of assets was approved a few years back by the parliament; nevertheless, some parliamentarians are not complying with it as they say it’s against them.
