‘200 Nangarhar University students have links with militants’

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The government said that 200 students of the Nangarhar University had links with the Taliban, Daesh and Hekmatyar-led Hezb-e-Islami Afghanistan.

Leading a delegation to probe support for the militant groups by the Nangarhar varsity students, the presidential advisor Qamaruddin Shenwari told BBC that the university students who led a demonstration and carried the flags of terrorist groups were affiliated with Daesh, Taliban and with Hezb-e-Islami. He furthered that among the students there were also lecturers who had links with the militant groups.  After the anti-government demonstration which held by the university students in Nangarhar, the National Directorate of Security (NDS) detained 27 students who were affiliated with the anti-government militant groups.

The NDS said that a number of the arrested students had also links with Hezb-e-Islami. According to the spy agency, the group was intending to hold more demonstration and to deteriorate the situation in Nangarhar and particularly in Nangarhar University.

The NDS furthered that the suspects were detained in a joint operation. The students who are linked with the terrorist groups belong to different provinces.

It is worth to mention that the 27 university students have been detained for carrying Taliban and Daesh flags during a protest rally.

On 10th November, a number of university students staged protest in which they were carrying flags of Islamic State, also known as Daesh, and Taliban in Jalalabad City, the provincial capital.  They were also chanting anti-government slogan during the demonstration. The protestors torn down the flag of Afghanistan with shouting “long live the Islamic Caliphate”.

Lawmakers in parliament and civil society activists asked the government to take stern action against the organizer of the rally.
