AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: After fierce fighting erupted on Thursday evening in the capital of central Uruzgan province, both security forces and the Taliban insurgents sustained casualties, provincial officials said on Friday.
The three-hour battle took place after the militants stormed security checkpoints in the Charamgar area on the outskirts of Tirinkot, the officials said.
Without giving exact figures about casualties, the governor’s spokesman Dost Mohammad Nayab told Pajhwok Afghan News that security personnel and attackers had suffered casualties.
However, the provincial council chairman Abdul Karim Khadimzai said that 22 policemen were killed and 11 others wounded in the attack.
“Nine police officers have been missing in the wake of the fierce clash,” Pajhwok quoted him as saying. He also said that a brother of the Afghan Local Police commander for Uruzgan had also gone missing.
Moreover, according to the news agency, local security official revealed the ALP commander himself had been killed in the overnight gun battle that began at 7pm and ended at 10pm.
This comes as recently the Afghan security forces have given tit-for-tat response to the Taliban’s attack in Trinkot, the capital city of southern Uruzgan province.
“Around 204 insurgents were killed and 146 other injured after heavy clashes erupted between Afghan security forces and the Taliban,” provincial governor spokesman Dost Muhammad Nayab told Afghanistan Times at that time. “Eight key commanders of the Taliban were also among the killed militants.”
Afghan Air Force and foreign forces targeted around 1,000 insurgents from air and beat them back. The militants were pushed back from the city while receiving huge casualties, he said. “Insurgents are on run to save their skin.”
Moreover, he added that 13 Afghan police were killed and 14 others were wounded during the attack
