AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Security forces on Saturday night raided a Taliban-run prison in the Marjah district of the southern Helmand province, freeing all 23 people held by the group in a cell, an official said.
“After securing the prison, the Afghan security forces freed twenty-three civilians and military officials from Taliban captivity, the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
“The prison was located in Karo square area of the district,” he said, adding that three guards were detained in during the raid.
A local police commander, who wished to remain anonymous, told Pajhwok Afghan News that two prisons belonging to the Taliban were destroyed in Sistani and Karo square areas of Marjah district and several inmates were freed.
However, the Taliban insurgents didn’t comment into the matter so far.
This comes when the Ministry of Defense said that Afghan National Army raided a Taliban-run prison in Nowzad district of southern Helmand province some three weeks back, in which 60 prisoners were freed from Taliban captivity. The ministry also said that two militants were killed and three others were received injuries during the raid.
According to the defense ministry, the prison was run by the Taliban shadow provincial governor Abdul Rahman, also known as Mullah Mannan.
