AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: At least 28 schools still remain closed in the southeastern Paktia province due to different reasons, said local officials.
The provincial education director, Loqman Hakim Hakimi, told Radio Azadi that due to security threats and several other problems around 28 schools still remain closed in the province. He termed lack of teachers as another reasons behind closure of the schools.
He said that they will exert their utmost efforts to open the schools next year. However, he sought cooperation of tribal elders, youth and civil society activists.
Members of Paktia provincial council and youth activists said that they have discussed the issue with the concerned officials, but the government is yet to take action.
Khalid, a civil society activist, termed corruption as the main hurdle before their efforts to reopen the schools. He urged the government to send a delegation to the province to assess the issue from close.
Muhammad Rahmman Qadiri, a member of Paktia provincial council, said that it should be made clear that where does the salaries of teachers of the closed schools go to. He stressed that the schools should be opened.
