FAIZABAD: Three Urban Development Ministry officials were Monday arrested in northern Badakhshan province on corruption charges as they attempted to flee to neighboring Tajikistan, an official said on Monday.
The Badakhshan governor’s spokesman, Ahmad Naveed Frotan, told Pajhwok Afghan News the three tainted officials were trying to cross the border into Tajikistan when police arrested them in Sheghnan district in the morning.
He identified the officials as Mohammad Amin Qani, Ahmad Nawaz Bakhtyar and Sayed Amanullah Sadaat who were on the list of six officials accused of corruption.
Police chief Col. Sakhi Dad Haidari said two local residents, Bashir and Abdul Ghazi, who were helping the officials to flee to Tajikistan had also been detained. All the detained were currently held at a detention center of the Shaghnan district, he said.
On May 30, the Attorney General Office (AGO) accused six Urban Development Ministry officials of embezzling millions of US dollars and placed a travel ban on them.
An official of the ministry, wishing anonymity, identified the remaining three officials as Ahmad Shah Hemmat, Aminullah Amin and Gul Rahman Ziarmal. (PAN)
