KABUL: At least 56 people were killed and 190 others were wounded in a suicide bombing during Friday prayers at a Shia mosque in Peshawar city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, media reported.
Some of the injured are reported in critical condition. No group has yet to claim the attack.
According to the witness, the attacker enter the mosque before Friday prayers and open fire with a pistol and then blew himself up among the prayers.
The attack comes at the similar day of the test cricket match going on between Pakistan and Australia in Rawalpindi — around 190 kilometres (120 miles) to the east.
However, the local officials of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa downplayed the death toll to 30 killed and 80 wounded.
The Islamic Emirate also reacted to the attack and condemned it.
“We condemn the bombing of a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan. There is no justification for attacking civilians and worshipers,” said Zabiullah Mujahid, Islamic Emirate’s Spokesman. “We express our deepest condolences to all the victims of the incident.”
