KABUL: At least 30 Taliban fighters have renounced insurgency by surrendering to the Afghan security forces in western Herat province, ministry of defense said on Sunday. The fighters had laid down their arms in Aostora and Jam villages in Chesht-e-Sharif district of the province.
According to the ministry of defense, Sahib Khan a Taliban commander and his 29 fighters had joined the peace process.
The cave in comes when the United States Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad has met with Afghan leaders and during the talks with President Ashraf Ghani he said there has not been any significant progress in his peace talks with the Taliban.
However, Khalilzad said he was hopeful of reaching an understanding with the group on reduction of hostilities, but did not offer any timeframe. After concluding talks in Doha, Brussels and Islamabad, Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Saturday where he separately held discussions with Afghan leaders.
