AT-KABUL: As many as 35 militants and their families on Sunday renounced violence and reintegrated into civil society by joining the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process in northern Jawzjan province, provincial official said. They surrender militants asked the government to provide them basic facilities.
Mullah Tahir and Malem Khan were the group leaders involved in subversive activities in the Dasht-i-Leili area of the Faryab province.
“The group members had been provided plots and all other facilities of living on the Khwaja Dokuh-Shiberghan raod,” Pajhwok Afghan News quoted Governor Maulvi Lutfullah Aziz, as saying.
He said that the government was responsible for protecting the citizens and ensuring the security of those who renounced insurgency and joined the peace process.
The violence shunners called on the government to provide them with weapons in a bid to fight against those people that fueling war in Afghanistan based on Pakistani’s interests.
Last month, more than 300 Taliban fighters quit the armed outfit and handed over their weapons to local authorities in the northern Samangan and western Badghis provinces.
The move, widely welcomed by the government and people, a total of 260 Talban militants gave up fighting and handed over their weapons to local authorities in Dara-e-Suf district of northern Samanagan province. They vowed to defend the government against insurgents.
On the same day, 11 Taliban groups comprising 80 fighter laid down their arms and joined the Afghan-owned and Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process in Jawand district of western Badghis province.
According to the Afghan High Peace Council official, more than 10,000 armed militants have shunned violence and joined peace process across the country.
