AT-KABUL: Police in the southern province of Uruzgan confirmed that Taliban militants stormed an army base in the Chenarto district, taking control of the base.

Akhtar Mohammad, police chief of the district said Sunday that at least 44 soldiers were killed in the attack and their bodies are still at the battle scene.

Taliban fighters assaulted the army base late Saturday night and destroyed its building, according to Akhtar, who said that the insurgents have surrounded the district center from four directions. He warned against the fall of the district and police casualties if reinforcements wouldn’t arrive.

Jan Mohammad, a tribal elder also confirmed that “around” 40 soldiers were killed in the district.

“Fighting is going on in Chenarto and Taliban fighters are advancing towards the police department,” said Mohammad.

The insurgents are reported to have damaged some government buildings that were newly built.

But, military officials only confirm the fall of the army base and count the death toll of soldiers less than reported.

Provincial police chief, Mohammad Maroof Ahmadzai, confirmed that “a military base” has fallen to Taliban in Chenarto, saying that three soldiers were killed and three more wounded.

He added that 11 assailants were killed and security forces were trying to retake the area.

Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said that the militants captured army base in Chenarto and gained a lot of arms and munitions.

He claimed that 55 soldiers were killed in the attack.

Chenarto lies in the east of provincial capital Tarinkot. Most parts of the district were under Taliban control in the past two years.
