AT-KABUL: The Nutrition and Education International (NEI) said Sunday that Afghan farmers produced 4,000 tons of soybeans in 2015, which demonstrates 100 per cent increase in production as comparing to previous year.
Some 2,000 tons of soybeans were produced in 2014, according to a statement issued by the NEI.
It was a record for the production of the soybeans in Afghanistan, it said.
“Soybeans dramatically increased in 2015 due to the hardworking of over 12,000 farmers throughout the country.”
The NEI supports Afghan farmers by providing seeds, fertilizers, post-harvest equipment, and bought soybeans for processing.
Farmers earn an income and become aware of soy nutrition.
The Afghan market demand for NEI’s soya flour is 300 metric tons used for soy bread, soy cookies, and other products.
Afghanistan is finding out that soy is as good as meat which is full of protein and cheaper than meat.
The NEI believes that after the harvest season, there is a low amount of soybeans available in the market. “Soybeans are either consumed by Afghan farmers or stored as seeds for the following year’s cultivation.”
The soybeans are mostly cultivated in seven provinces such as Parwan, Kapisa, Takhar, Kunduz, Nangarhar, Herat and Kabul.
