AT-Kabul: Taliban militants stormed two security checkpoints in Farah province on Thursday night, leaving at least 43 Afghan security soldiers dead and injuring around 10, local officials said, as the country is bearing witness to a high uptick in violence as militants fiercely target not only security forces but also civilians.

Taliban militants waged simultaneous nocturnal attacks on two checkpoints on Thursday night, said Farah provincial council head. Farid Bakhtawar said assailants stormed Dorahi checkpoint in Balabolok district and killed 23 police personnel. The Raj checkpoint in central Farah also came under attack and at least nine police personnel were killed and three more injured.

Nine army soldiers were also killed during a firefight with militants, summing casualties to 43 in the dual attacks, he reckoned. Farah province is a hub of opium cultivation in western Afghanistan.
