60 tons of low quality, expired drugs torched

AT-KABUL: The Ministry of Public Health set alight around 60 tons of low quality and expired medicines in Butkhak district of Kabul province on Tuesday.

The medicines were collected from drugs importing companies, wholesalers and different stores in the outskirt of Kabul city in a bid to improve healthcare services in the country.

Ministry of Public Health in a statement said that the ministry has taken serious decision to stop import of poor-quality and expired medicines to the country. The ministry also decided to talk with the neighboring countries to export standard drugs, based on the accepted international regulations.

According to the ministry the open borders of Afghanistan has made it difficult to control illegal import of low-quality and sub-standard medicine. This year the ministry decided to overcome the problem by monitoring at least 300 companies that import medicines.

Afghans spend more than $300 million in other countries for treatment.
