KABUL: At least 62 Taliban rebels were killed and 19 others were wounded during a latest crackdown conducted by the Afghan security forces in southern Kandahar and Uruzgan provinces, defense officials said on Sunday.
A group of Taliban fighters attacked Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) in Dand, Zherai, Arghandab, Maiwand and Shah Wali Kot districts of Kandaha, which faced counterattack by the Afghan security forces that resulted into the killing of 50 Taliban militants, a statement issued by the ministry said.
Nine other Taliban rebels were wounded in the attack.
Also 13 IEDs were discovered and defused and four hideouts with a large amount of weapons and ammunition were destroyed by the Afghan security forces, according to the statement.
Similarly, the Afghan security forces pushed back Taliban attacks in Dehrawod district of Uruzgan province.
At least 10 Taliban fighters were killed and 10 others were wounded in the onslaught, the statement added.
On the other hand, the ANA prevented the destruction of two bridges in Chashmai Sher of Baghlan province on Sunday. The Taliban had placed IEDs under the bridges to demolish them. ANA discovered and defused the IEDs and prevented the destruction of the bridges, the statement concluded.
