AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: At least seven policemen were killed after the Taliban insurgents attacked their checkpoint in southern Zabul province, a well-placed source said on Wednesday.
A local official, who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the incident took place in Arghandab district around 09:00 pm Tuesday night.
“Seven policemen were killed and seven others wounded when a group of Taliban stormed their security post in Tawoos area of the district,” the source added.
A Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed responsibity for the attack and claimed that 12 policemen were killed in the overnight attack. Moreover, he confirmed that one Taliban fighter was killed in the attack.
This comes as recently the provincial governor and mayor of southern Zabul province have survived an ambush by unidentified gunmen.
“A group of insurgents attack official’s convoy on Zabul-Kandahar high as the officials were on their way to Shar-e-Safa dstirct,” provincial governor spokesman Gul Islam Siyal said in that time.
Governor’s Besmellah Afghanmal and Mayor Karimullah Hakimi escaped the attack unhurt, he added.
