AT-KABUL: At least 70 Taliban insurgents were killed and 30 others wounded in a series of airstrikes carried out in the western Farah province, security officials said Tuesday.
Provincial police chief, Hassan Shah Forugh, said that the strikes were carried out in the province but did not elaborate whether the attacks were carried out by international warplanes.
“The airstrikes targeted Taliban hideouts that resulted in the death of 70 and 30 others injured during the operation,” he said.
Forugh added the weapons of Taliban insurgents were destroyed in the area as well, according to him no civilian casualties reported in the operation.
He said their military operation will continue to target insurgents’ hideouts.
Meanwhile, NATO’s Resolute Support mission confirmed the airstrikes, saying that they were carried out to help Afghan forces in their military operation against insurgents.
“We can confirm that on 17 Oct, U.S forces conducted multiple airstrikes in Farah district, Farah province and four airstrikes in Bakwah district, Farah province in defense of friendly forces. While we can’t discuss all of the details of the operations, we can confirm that B52s were not used. Because we are supporting the security forces in their ongoing efforts to secure Farah, we refer you to the GIRoA for additional details on those operations,” said Brigadier General Charles Cleveland, Deputy Chief of Staff for Communication, Resolute Support.
Separately, At least 51 Taliban insurgents including their three commanders were killed in southern Helmand province in operations conducted by security forces, Helmand media office said in a statement.
“The operations were carrying out in different area of Lashkargah, Garmser of the province. During the operations 12 Taliban vehicles, six motorcycles and weapons were also destroyed,” the statement said.
Recently Taliban insurgents intensified their attacks in Helmand, Farah, Uruzgan, Baghlan and Kunduz provinces, but the Taliban has sustained heavy casualties during military operations.
