KABUL: U.S. Special Envoy for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalamy Khalilzad and Taliban negotiation member are going to hold seventh round of talks next week as some progress already made on several issues and discussions on a draft agreement for when foreign troops might withdraw from Afghanistan could dominate the talks.
Khalilzad will sit in talks with Taliban member on 29th in Doha, Qater, where major progress over peace process was expected.
Earlier, Khalilzad made clear to the Taliban that the U.S. did not seek a troop withdrawal agreement, but a comprehensive peace accord in Afghanistan.
However, Qatar-based Taliban spokesman, Suhail Shaheen in a tweet claimed that the U.S. agreed over troop withdrawal from the country something strongly rejected by US.
Counterterrorism assurance, U.S. troop withdrawal, direct talks between Afghan government and Taliban to agree over a comprehensive ceasefire across the country.
The Afghan-born U.S. top diplomat, Khalilzad, constantly said that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”
The U.S. and the Taliban had held six rounds of lengthy talks in Doha. At the end of talks, both parties told reporters they reached progress over peace process in the country.
However, the Taliban said that the group took U.S. troop withdrawal from the country and assurance of counterterrorism with US envoy.
Khalilzad, on the other hand, during an interview with a local T.V. channel, emphasized that intra-Afghan dialogue and ceasefire, in addition to troop withdrawal and counterterrorism were essential parts of the direct talks with the Taliban group. Without agreeing over all parts, no agreement was made over one or two part, he added.
