KABUL: The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reported today that 45 journalists and media workers were killed in 2021 while on duty in 20 countries.
The highest death toll was in Afghanistan, as 9 journalists were killed in 2021, according to the (IFJ) report.
According to the (IFJ), these figures are one of the lowest casualties in 30 years.
Meanwhile, there were 65 reported murders of journalists in 2020.
Moreover, the International Federation says the death toll in 2021 confirms a trend in which media workers are often killed for exposing corruption, crime and abuse of power in their communities, cities and countries.
The agency has stated that 33 journalists had been killed in targeted attacks, including nine in Afghanistan, eight in Mexico, four in India, and three in Pakistan.
According to statistics, 2,721 journalists have been killed worldwide since 1991.
