AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: Germany’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has assured his country’s support to Afghanistan and announced €350 million fund for Afghanistan’s reconstruction in 2016. The announcement taken after Steinmeier attended meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels on Tuesday.
While taking into account the security situation of the country, Steinmeier said that the number of German troops would be increased to 980 in Afghanistan. Currently, 850 German troops are in Afghanistan and they are busy in training Afghan local forces.
He assured of his county’s support and said that Germany would play its role in training, advising and assisting the Afghan National Security Forces under the framework of NATO’s “Resolute Support” mission in Afghanistan.
He also asked the Afghan government to take measure in order to translate its commitment into actions on matters of reform, fighting corruption and the peace talks with the Taliban.
The second round of direct peace talks between Afghan government and Taliban was suspended when the Taliban confirmed the death of their leader Mullah Omar.
The United States of America and China have been pushing for resumption of peace talks but the current tension between Kabul and Islamabad hampering the process.
This is worth mentioning that German security official said that after the Taliban captured Kunduz province, they have decided to delay the pullout plan of German troops from Afghanistan beyond next year.
