AT-KABUL: A local official in Maidan Wardak province said they have detained three army officers in connection with the mortar shell firing in Maidan Wardak province that led to killing of nine civilians, including four children.
According to Reports, a mortar shell fired by Afghan security forces hit a play ground in Sayed Abad district of Maidan Wardak province earlier this week.
A fact finding commission assigned by the provincial governor said that the mortar attack was carried out by an army check post in the district. “Three army officers have been detained in connection with the incident and handed over to the judicial organizations,” provincial governor, Hayatullah Hayat, told Afghanistan Times. He said that court will decide that whether the incident was accidental or an intentional act.
Defense Ministry spokesman, Dawlat Waziri, in a press conference said that a high-level commission has been assigned by President Ashraf Ghani to investigate the incident. He vowed that “justice would be done”. He said that the commission will share all details with people.
“Civilian casualties are not acceptable for us, either accidental or intentional,” Waziri told newsmen.
