AT-KABUL: Following a presidential order, the Ministry of Education (MoE) is mulling to launch a national literacy campaign to eradicate illiteracy across the country. The campaign would be conducted in cooperation with volunteers, NGOs, literacy education providers, communities, ministries and other government institutions from district to national level.
A first one-day forum meeting titled “Literacy Initiative for Empowerment” was held by MoE with the support of Afghan National Association for Adult Education (ANAFAE) and DVV International, in order to explore ways to run a successful national literacy campaign throughout the country.
The session was attended by MoE officials, representatives of the donor organizations and a number of literacy education providers.
The Deputy Minister of Education for Literacy, Mohammad Azim Karbalaie, said that launching a national mobilization campaign is aimed at eradication of illiteracy across the country.
Speaking at the meeting here on Monday, he said that tangible progress has been made in the area over the past 13 years, but now it is time to mobilize all efforts at the national level to the fight against illiteracy and improve quality of literacy education.
The updated National Literacy Strategy which is an important part of the National Education Strategy NESP III will serve as guide for the campaign.
“We will explore ways to run this campaign through teachers, university students, government officials and religious scholars to guarantee success of the drive,” he added.
He said that the campaign will be comprised of literacy awareness programs, surveys about illiterate people, providing literacy trainings, monitoring, granting certificates and finding new ways of providing literacy trainings.
He insisted that literacy programs are the top priority of the National Unity Government (NUG).
Karbalaie appreciated the support of UNESCO, JICA Japan, ANAFAE, DVV International, GIZ, the governments of Japan, Sweden and Finland, and several other important national and international organizations and urge all donors for cooperation in making the campaign a success.
