Protestors push govt to start war crimes trials

AIHRC must share the list of war crimes with public: Protestors

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Hundreds of people swelled into the streets on Thursday and called on the government to kick off war crimes trials.

The protestors marched from Dehbori square to Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC)’s office chanting slogans “death to war criminals, death to betrayers”.  They were also carrying banners inscribed with “war criminals should be brought to the books, impunity-culture must end, and AIHRC must unveil the facts.

A civil society activist Faiz Mohammad Zaland, a protestor, said that AIHRC must work independently without political compromises against war criminals.

He said they want fearless war crimes trials.

He said that war crimes trials must include gross human rights violations by different communist regimes, the deadliest civil war, the Taliban regime and their still ongoing atrocities, the government and foreign forces.

“AIHRC should not remain silent against war criminals,” he added.

“We condemn human rights violations in Jaghori, Achin, Shenwari, Sayedabad districts and other parts of the country and call on the government to punish the perpetrators,” he said.

He urged AIHRC to share the list of war criminals with public.

He called on the AIHRC to be independent and aloof of politics and must be fearless in condemnation of all war crimes.

“If our demands are not addressed, we will continue our protests,” he said.

Another protestor, Salem Asgharkhil, said the people were awakening as today people from across the country came together to condemn the war crimes and urge relevant departments to bring war criminals to books.

“Touching up the recent incidents in Sayedabad district of Maidan Wardak and the killing of nine teenagers,” he said the government must probe into the incident seriously. “Instead of symbolic probes into the war crimes by commissions, the government must initiate probes in war crimes honestly,” the protestors said.
