AT-KABUL: Afghan security forces have accelerated the pace of military operation against the Taliban insurgents in Sangin district of southern Helmand province, said Ministry of Interior (MoI).
Spokesman for the ministry Seddiq Seddiqi said on Saturday that clashes between militants and government forces were underway in Sangin district. He said the security forces were engaged in clearance operation in different parts of the district.
Speaking at a press conference here he said that Afghan security forces were advancing in Sangin, adding that the district would be cleared of insurgents soon.
He said that Afghan National Army, Special Forces and Afghan National Police are involved in the special operation in Sangin district. Over 50 Taliban fighters were killed in the past two days. Equipment and ammunition were sent to the security forces. Only two Afghan soldiers were killed in the past 24 hours, he added.
The spokesman claimed that security forces have also concentrated over Marja, Khanshin, Grishk and Kajaki districts of Helmand province to neutralize the existing and potential threats.
“The Taliban had increased their attacks over districts in 2015. However, Afghan security forces repelled these attacks successfully. The security forces also increased raids over insurgents in different provinces this year,” he said.
He reiterated that Afghan security forces are capable of defending the country and defeating the enemies in the battlefield. The spokesman said that the security forces are also concentrating on Badakhshan, Baghlan and Takhar provinces to defeat the militants.
