AT-KABUL: A powerful earthquake, 6.3 in magnitude, rocked Afghanistan on late Friday night, destroying several houses in different provinces. At least 12 people were injured.
Spokesman for State Ministry of Disaster Management Affairs, Omar Mohammadi, said that according to the US Geological Survey the earthquake struck Afghanistan at 11:15 pm. The epicenter of the earthquake was said to be northern Afghanistan at a depth of 203 kilometer. The earthquake was able to be felt in the nearby countries of Tajikistan, India and Pakistan.
He said that totally 74 houses were destroyed in Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan, Kunar, Parwan and Nangarhar provinces. Around 12 people were wounded in Nangarhar province. Fifteen cattle killed in Badakhshan province.
The spokesman said that fortunately, the ministry had preparations for the winter season and stocked enough edible and non-edible items in different zones to help disaster victims. “After survey, these relief items will be used to help the earthquake-affected people,” he added.
Spokesman for Nangarhar’s governor, Attaullah Khogyanai, said that 12 people were injured in Jalalabad city.
He added that the wounded people were shifted to hospital and health condition of two injured people was critical.
Most of people were sleeping when the earthquake jolted Afghanistan. Awoken by the quake, people were running to an open space while reciting verses from the Holy Quran.
