AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: A large number of militants have renounced violence and joined the Afghan-owned peace process in the western Ghor province, officials said on Sunday.
A group of 89 insurgents has reintegrated into the civil society by laying down their arms. They also handed over 80 weapons, including machineguns, Kalashnikovs and 50 landmines to the government. The militants group was led by Mullah Arif in Dolina district of the province.
The provincial governor Ghulam Nasir Khazi in a gathering called on other militants to renounce violence and join the reconciliation process. He also welcomed the militants to be a part of the mainstream in Afghanistan.
The provincial chief of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Gen. Mohammad Hanif Nuristani said that since the insurgent group had renounced violence, security situation of Dolina district would improve.
The leader of former insurgents, Mullah Arif, said that he had been actively involved in anti-government activities in the district for the past two years.
“When I came to know that Pakistani intelligence agencies are fueling insurgency in the country, I decided to renounce violence,” he said. He also called on the government to take practical steps for their welfare.
He said that it is Pakistani spy agency which is making last-ditch efforts to turn Afghans against each other.
