AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: In his daily news conference, the White House’s Press Secretary, Josh Earnest told newsmen that President Barack Obama had been informed regarding causalities of US troops caused in Afghanistan fighting. “This does underscore that Afghanistan is a dangerous place,” he said.
A US troop was killed and two more were wounded in hours-long fighting in southern Helmand province on Tuesday. The death took place in Marja district of the province, where American Special Operations forces have been helping the Afghan security forces to repel the insurgents attack.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said the United States Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) spokesman, Brig. Gen. Wilson A. Shoffiner. “On behalf of Gen. Campbell and all of USFOR-A, our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of those involved.”
As fighting continues at least 34 Taliban insurgents have been killed and 16 others wounded in a joint operation launched by Afghan and foreign forces in the Marja district, official said on Wednesday.
Marja district was once considered stronghold of the Taliban. Taliban insurgents have recently intensified their activities in the area despite the onset of winter season.
