By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: The government and the United Nations Humanitarian Community in Afghanistan seek an appeal of $393 million to assist needy and vulnerable people across the country in 2016.
“The government and the UN humanitarian community made humanitarian response plan for 2016 to assist 3.5 million vulnerable people across the country,” said Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah.
Speaking at the launch of 2016 humanitarian response plan Abdullah said that $53.7 million will be allocated for emergency shelters and non-food assistance, $110 million for agriculture and food protection, over $30 million for health programs, $63.2 million for nutrition, $20.5 million for water supply and $36.8 million for the remaining aspects.
He asked the donors to support the humanitarian response plan of Afghanistan for 2016.
The chief executive called on the relevant government organs to distribute the aids to the real needy people.
“Coordination must be better among the related organs to prevent wasting of the relief,” he insisted.
He said that Afghanistan had appealed for $417 million in 2015, but received $424 million, that 2.2 million needy people were assisted with the extra donated amount.
The UN humanitarian coordinator Mark Bowden said that Afghanistan needed $393 million this year to acute life-saving needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized Afghans.
He said that support related to food as well as access to health care, nutrition, potable water and sanitation to some 3.5 million people.
“I have no doubt that we will be called to redouble those efforts and deliver increasing levels of assistance to those in need of life-saving humanitarian response over the next 12 months,” Bowden asserted.
He said that from January to November 2015, more than 300,000 people fled their homes due to conflict marking a 160 per cent increase comparing to the same period in 2014.
German Ambassador to Afghanistan Markus Potzel promised that his country would remain committed to continue humanitarian aids to Afghanistan.
Afghan Humanitarian Community Representative Amanullah Jawad asked for the donation of the aids through the non-governmental organizations “because they are aware of situation in the localities.”
