KABUL: The Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah reacted towards the disapproval of fight against Taliban militants, saying the Afghan government is obliged to protect the people against terror.
In his speech during a ceremony marking the 2nd death anniversary of Marshal Qasim Fahim, Abdullah said “It is unacceptable for Afghans if one is saying that fight agianst Taliban is not allowed.”
Abdullah further added “Anyone, from any institution, announcing the ongoing fight against Taliban as ‘illegitimate’, will lose their legitimacy among the peole.”
He was apparently gesturing towards the newly-appointed chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani who recently said he does not deem fight against Taliban militants as ‘fruitful or allowed’.
In an interview with BBC Faris, Gilani said he has also called on Taliban militants to renounce violence.
He also added that he is hopeful that the Taliban leadership might be happy with his appointment as the new chairman of the High Peace Council, noting his direct and indirect contacts with the group since the jihad times.
Gilani is a prominent religious and political figure who assumed charge of the Afghan High Peace Council last month amid ongoing efforts to put an end to the ongoing violence in the country through a peaceful settlement.—(Khaama Press)
