AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Russian President’s envoy to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov has said that the Islamic State (IS) also known as Daesh, is expanding its military activity in Afghanistan with an estimated number of 10,000 fighters.
“The IS activity has grown significantly in Afghanistan since summer 2014. The group numerical strength is estimated at 10,000 people,” Kabulov was quoted by the state-run TASS news agency, as saying.
“The figure can continue growing, as the IS slogans and high financing are attractive to Afghan youth.”
However, Afghan defense and interior ministries have rejected the claims made by the top Russian official regarding 10,000 IS fighters in the country.
“We reject the claim that Daesh (the Arabic acronym for IS) is growing in Afghanistan, Daesh is about to fall in Afghanistan,” Sediq Sediqqi, spokesman for the interior ministry told Ariana News channel.
