AT-KABUL: Unknown gunmen have kidnapped an Indian female aid worker in Kabul city on Thursday night, Afghan and Indian officials confirmed on Friday.
The kidnapped Indian citizen was identified as Judith D’Souza, 40-years-old, working as a senior technical advisor on gender with the Aga Khan Developmental Network in Kabul, sources in New Delhi said.
The kidnapping took place in Taimani area of Kabul, Afghan sources said.
However, no group had claimed responsibility.
Indian sources said that its embassy in Kabul is in touch with senior Afghan officials and the government to secure safe release of the aid worker.
The kidnapping comes as the Indian embassy issued a security alert earlier last month for Indians residing in Afghanistan and travelling to the country.
“All Indians residing and travelling to Afghanistan are advised that the security situation in the country remains highly volatile. Terrorist attacks have taken place in the country against foreigners and are expected to continue. There is also the risk of kidnapping and hostage taking throughout Afghanistan,” the Indian embassy in Kabul warned.
It is also worth mentioning that earlier, the US embassy in Kabul also issued two separate alerts, warning regarding a possible suicide and coordinated attack or kidnapping attempt of foreigners in capital Kabul.
