AT-KABUL: The foundation-stone for the construction of Bamyan cultural center was laid down by the minister of urban development Syed Sadat Mansoor Naderi in the presence of representatives from UNESCO and the Embassy of South Korea on Sunday.
“Bamyan province could be turned into a vital tourism and economic hub in the country,” Naderi said during foundation stone laying ceremony.
“The cultural heritage of the province holds immense importance for Afghanistan, as well for UNESCO,” he said, asserting that construction of the Cultural Center in Bamyan was one of key projects of the organization.
He added that the culture center would help people to boost their knowledge regarding culture and arts of the province. “It is not only a research and education center, but also a recreation area for the public.” He added that center would comprise of exhibition hall, auditorium, separate rooms for workshops and classes, and shopping centers.
The project, including a recreational park, will be implemented by the UNESCO.
South Korea is funding two phases of the project, while the third phase would be funded by Ministry of Urban Development.
It is worth mentioning that Bamyan was officially declared as the cultural capital of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) for 2015.
The declaration would provide an opportunity for the province to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and could also abet urban regeneration.
The Taliban insurgents destroyed the two standing Buddha statues in March 2001 before the United States target them in Afghanistan.
