By Mansoor Faizy-KABUL: Afghan security forces on Thursday night freed nine hostages from a Taliban prison in Grishk district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Friday.
“The raid was carried in the Shorki locality of the province, in which two Afghan soldiers, a policeman, and six civilians were set freed from the jail,” spokesman for Ministry of Defense, Gen. Dawlat Waziri, said.
Taliban suffered casualties during the raid, he said, asserting that security forces recovered some weapons belonging to the Taliban insurgents. However, the Taliban insurgents did not comment on the overnight operation.
Helmand is considered one of the most insecure provinces of Afghanistan, where the Taliban insurgents are active and seized control of various villages and towns. Security forces have redoubled their efforts to drive back the insurgents who have seized large parts of the volatile southern province.
It is worth mentioning that, earlier Afghan security forces freed several hostages from Taliban prison in the province. A month back, the Afghan National Army during a raid in Nowzad district of the province, freed 60 prisoners from a Taliban jail. Two militants were killed and three others received injuries during the raid.
The prison was run by the Taliban shadow provincial governor, Abdul Rahman, also famous as Mullah Mannan. Ten motorcycles belonging to the militants were destroyed in the raid. Additionally, huge cache of explosives was also seized.
