AT-KABUL: Afghan Special Forces raided several Taliban jails in southwestern Helmand province and released at least 101 hostages including civilians from Taliban captivity, Ministry of Defense said Monday.
Spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, Dawlat Waziri, said the Afghan commandos conducted the operations last night in Marjah, Nahri-Saraj and Nawzad districts of the province, areas under the Taliban control.
The exact identity and number of civilians and security forces among the hostages has not been disclosed as the related organs are still working to categorize the rescued persons, Waziri said, who did not provide any information on whether there were casualties among security forces or the Taliban during the raids.
Separately, at least 38 Taliban insurgents were killed and 18 others wounded in different operations launched by the security forces within the past 24 hours across the county, security officials said on Monday.
“The national army with the cooperation of the national police and the national directorate of security operatives, conducted clearance operations against insurgents in different areas of Nangarhar, Laghman, Ghazni, Paktia, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Ghor, Kunduz, Faryab, Jowzjan and Helmand provinces,” the defense ministry said in a statement.
“In these operations, 38 insurgents including seven Daesh terrorist were killed and 18 others injured,” it said, without elaborating about the Daesh fighters’ death.
“Unfortunately, eight soldiers were also killed during the clashes,” the ministry said.
