AT-KABUL: Ministry of Public Health on Monday reported a positive polio case in Paktika after thorough investigation. The total number of positive polio cases in this year has increased to eight. The ministry in a media statement issued here said the results of the final investigation of the two most recent cases which were diagnosed as polio in the preliminary testing have been released. “The investigation revealed that the case of Bermal, Paktika, was a polio case that was genetically linked to a virus from South Waziristan, whereas the case of Kabul was confirmed to be negative for polio,” the statement said.
This brings the total number of polio cases to eight in Afghanistan in the current year. In response to the transmission in Paktika, two supplementary immunization activity (SIA) campaigns have been conducted and the National Immunization Days are planned on October 17 to deliver oral polio vaccines (OPV) house to house along with de-worming tablets for children under five years of age.
Afghanistan remains one of the last three polio-endemic countries in the world. The Ministry of Public Health and partners continue their efforts towards polio eradication.
