AT-KABUL: At least three civilians were killed and 14 others wounded in a suicide car bombing in southern province of Helmand, a local official said Monday.
Provincial governor spokesman Omar Zwak said that the attack happened in Lashkar Gah city, the provincial capital.
Provincial emergency hospital officials said they had received 14 injured including civilians and soldiers.
Reports indicate the death toll was likely to rise as it was unclear how many people remain unaccounted for after the explosion.
Zwak rejected reports about fall of a police district to Taliban militants, saying security forces “are performing their routine check up in the area right now”.
This comes as deputy provincial council claimed early Monday that Taliban had entered a refugee camp in the second police district of Lashkar Gah city.
Lashkar Gah has been under attacks by Taliban militants for several months and the militants have been on the outskirt of the city for a long time aiming to overrun the province.
Separately, at least 20 Taliban insurgents including three key commanders were killed and eight others wounded in a joint clearance operation was conducted by security forces in the northern province of Jowzjan, security officials said.
In a statement, ministry of interior said the operation was launched in Qosh Tepa district late Sunday.
“The insurgent commanders were identified as Qari Ehsan, Muvlawi Jandullah and Mullah Taj who were killed in clash with security forces,” the statement said.
It added no security forces and civilians were received casualties during the operation.
