Two Americans killed, three injured in Kabul attack

AT-KABUL: One US soldier and one US civilian were killed in an attack by an unknown assailant Wednesday in Kabul, the US Forces in Afghanistan (USFOR-A) said in a statement.

“One U.S. service member and one U.S. civilian died as a result of wounds sustained in Kabul, Afghanistan today (Wednesday). One U.S. service member and two U.S. civilians also sustained wounds and are currently stable,” the statement added.

“Anytime we lose a member of our team, it is deeply painful” said General John W. Nicholson, Commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and Resolute Support. “Our sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and the units of those involved in this incident. To those who continue to target Coalition forces, ANDSF, and Afghan civilians, RS and USFOR-A will continue to pursue our Train, Advise, and Assist mission to help our partners create a better Afghanistan.”

“The two individuals were killed during an attack near a coalition base by an unknown assailant, who was later killed. They were conducting duties as part of the larger NATO mission to Train, Advise, and Assist the Afghan security services.  An investigation is being conducted to determine the exact circumstances of the event,” the statement added.

The statement furthered, U.S. Department of Defense Policy is to withhold the identity of those involved pending next-of-kin notification. “We will release additional information as appropriate.”

Afghan defense ministry also confirmed the news and said that the incident took place around 11:00am after a man opened for on foreign troops in Kabul.

“A man in army uniform opened fire on foreign troops, killing two and wounded five others in Rishkoar area, south of the city. “The assailant was also killed in foreign forces return fire.”

However, he did not provide further information, but said that a probe team has been assigned to start inquiry after the incident.
