AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: An Afghan man has reportedly been arrested by police in India after half a kilo of heroin was recovered from his stomach and rectum during a surgery.
According to India media, an Afghan national, who had fallen ill on board a flight to Kabul, had to be admitted to AIIMS where he was operated upon. During the surgery, doctors extracted more than half a kilogram of heroin, stuffed in 57 capsules, from his stomach and rectum. The arrested man confessed to having swallowed a polythene containing the contraband worth 20 million Rupees (Indian currency).
Police sources quoted by Times of India said the man was a part of an international drug syndicate and had come to India on a medical visa.
The trafficker, identified as Ghulam Rabbani (43), had crossed all security checks at IGI airport and was about to board the Kabul bound KAM flight on November 3 when he suddenly developed severe stomach ache, the source added.
He was offloaded and admitted to AIIMS. Police became suspicious as Rabbani had come to India on a medical visa, but had not visited any hospital for treatment.
“During surgery, it was established that Rabbani had swallowed a large number of capsules. The capsules were opened and heroin was found in them. The weight of the contraband was 525 grams,” said deputy commissioner of police Sanjay Bhatia. Rabbani was arrested and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, he added.
