AT-KABUL: The National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives rescued a boy kidnapped in the western Farah province and arrested four suspects.
“The 6-year-old Naveed was kidnapped a few days ago from Police District 3 of the provincial capital city, Farah,” the NDS said in a statement.
“The boy was kidnapped for ransom $100,000, but intelligence released him before his family gave the money,”
It added that the boy was released during an operation launched on Tuesday afternoon, in which four suspects were detained.
“We finally rescued the child after serious of operations and sent the culprits behind bars,” the statement noted.
In a video released by the kidnappers, the boy is shown with his hands tied to his back as he desperately tries to eat food.
“I am scared in this well, mom, they will kill me!” the half-naked boy who appeared to have been malnourished said.
His father said that he could not manage to pay the huge ransom.
“They were demanding $100,000 from me, but I didn’t have even 1,000 afghanis,” the victim’s father, Abdul Jaleel, said. “They called me threatening that I would collect his body parts.”
Jaleel urged the government for the secure release of his son.
Local officials confirmed the kidnapping, saying efforts were underway for his release.
“When insurgents attacked the city, the kidnappers used opportunity to take away the child,” said Muhammad Ghaws Malyar, the provincial security director. “Our intelligence is searching for him.”
Kabul police had rescued two children from kidnappers during a special operation in Kabul late January. Two men and a woman were detained in connection with abduction.
Kabul police chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi said: “When we were rescuing one child we knew was kidnapped, we saw another child who was also there and rescued him too.” Moreover, he assured to arrest those involved in “this evil practice”.
Kidnapping is considered a major problem in Afghanistan, with ransom being motive in most of the cases.
