36 captives rescued from Taliban-run jail

AT-KABUL: The Afghan security forces in an operation freed 50 civilians taken hostage by the Taliban in southern Helmand province, security officials said Wednesday.

“The operation was launched late Tuesday in the Greshk district,” ministry of interior said in a statement.

It added that the Taliban insurgents were torturing the civilians in the cell, including the children who were kept as hostages.

“The Taliban insurgents managed to flee the area with the deployment of the security forces,” the statement noted.

No casualties were incurred to security personnel and civilians during the operation and no further details were given during the operation.

This comes as Afghan Special Forces raided several Taliban jails in Helmand and Ghazni provinces and released at least 151 hostages including civilians from Taliban captivity, Ministry of Defense said earlier October.

Separately, at least 22 insurgents were killed and 10 others wounded in different operations launched by the Afghan security forces within the past 24 hours across the county, Ministry of Interior said.

Afghan National Army (ANA) with the cooperation of the Afghan National Police (ANP) and the National Directorate of Security operatives, conducted clearance operations against insurgents in different areas of Kabul, Laghman, Parwan, Nangarhar, Helmand, Ghor, Kapisa, Herat, Paktia, Paktika, Khost, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Helmand, Baghlan, and Kunduz provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

In these operations, 22 insurgents were killed and 10 others injured, the ministry claimed but did not provide names of the killed and injured militants.

According to the statement four insurgents were arrested during the operations.

The ministry also claimed that the security forces have seized huge cache of ammunition during the operations, but the statement did not provide any details.

Security forces have suffered no casualties during the raids, the statement said.
