AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: At least 12 police were killed when the Taliban insurgents attacked their checkpoints in western Farah province, an official said on Monday.
However, another provincial official said that three police officers and 10 insurgents were killed in the attack.
Mohammad Nasar Mohammadi, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that insurgents stormed some security posts in Kansak and Shamalgah areas of Farah City, the provincial capital, and in Bala Buluk district’s Kalkala locality on Sunday night.
“Three police and 10 militants, including a notorious commander, Mullah Lawang were killed in the attack,” the official said, adding that two police officers and six militants were also received injures in the attack.
“The rest of the militants who carried out attack against policemen escaped the scene,” the official said, wishing to remain anonymous.
At the same time, a police official at the provincial police headquarters said that more than 12 police were killed in the attacks conducted by the insurgents.
“The number of slain police officers was more than 12,” Pajhwok Afghan News quoted Mohammad Ewaz, a resident of Kansak, as saying.
However, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed the fighters had captured a security check post in the Shamalgah area, killing 13 police at the post along with the post commander. He said the fighters had also recovered eight weapons from the police post.
