AT-KABUL: The Ministry of Interior said Sunday a team had been appointed to investigate the forced marriage case in the eastern Nangarhar province.
The victim said that her husband accused her for not being virgin on the first night of marriage, marrying her younger sister by force.
Provincial spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, confirmed a team has arrived in the province to investigate the forced marriage in the Shewa district.
“The investigators met the deputy governor, the intelligence chief and the provincial police chief and they all assured the team of their cooperation in the investigation,” he said.
Khogyani added that the local authorities had earlier started investigation the case and four people including the groom’s father, the imam who signed the marriage contract and two others involved had been arrested.
He said 13 people were involved in the case.
This comes as the British government said in a report that “documented cases of violence against women have risen” in the first half of 2016, with 5,132 cases reported to the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, “including 241 murders.”
Earlier in August, news emerged from the remote central province of Ghor’s district of Zarah, a 14-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly tortured and set on fire by her in-laws as they took revenge on her father over a failed deal to marry one of their relatives.
