Last year, Serbia has become a major route for migrants, hit by terrorism and poverty, to make their way to wealthy Western Europe. Serbian authorities claimed that 110,000 migrants have passed through the country, though the route was closed off in March. Since, Turkey and Bulgaria is no more easy routes for the human traffickers, Serbia is used as a stopover destination by the smugglers to cross into Hungary.
In February this year, several industrial countries closed borders for Afghan immigrants. Macedonia and Serbia also participated in the crackdown on Afghan asylum-seekers. Macedonian government has banned entry of Afghan immigrants. Macedonia allowed only Iraqis and Syrians to enter.
According to the UNHCR, nearly 7,000 migrants are stranded in Serbian camps.
