At least two coordinated attacks hit Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday, leaving many casualties.
The first attack happened in Police District 6, west Kabul.
It targeted police headquarters of the district which is adjuncent also to artillery school.
Pictures posted on social media showed huge smoke rising above the city following the explosion.
The attack involved a suicide car bombing near the police HQ at 12:30p.m.
“Following the explosion, a group of armed assiliants attempted to enter the compound of district police HQ,” according to a statement from Interior Ministry, adding the insurgents were surrounded by security forces and clashes between the sides were ongoing in the area.
The statement didn’t provide details on casualties.
Residents in the area said that several gunshots were heard following the blast.
At least 35 injured people were transferred to hospital following the explosion, according to health officials.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in a post on twitter claimed responsibility for the attack.
The group also claimed another attack which it said targeted intelligence center in Arzan Qimat area, east Kabul.
Commenting on the attack, the Interior Ministry’s statement said that it involved two suicide attackers, one of whom detonated explosives in front of the office of National Directorate of Security, the country’s intelligence agency.
The other assiliant was killed by security forces. According to the ministry, five people were injured in the attack, but the Afghan Health Ministry confirmed killing of one in the assault.
Earlier, police sources told 1TV that the assault was suppressed by the Afghan security forces 15 minutes after it was launched.
The attack comes as Afghan government has given a list of 85 militants including Taliban leader to Pakistan seeking action against them.
It comes as the country is preparing to embrace spring season, when fighting usually intensifies.
The latest spate of attacks in Kabul comes three weeks after a suicide bomber killed at least 20 people outside the Supreme Court in the city, an attack claimed by Islamic State militant group. (1TV)
